Original introduction:
Boshan furnace, also known as Boshan incense burner, Boshan incense burner, Boshan incense burner, etc., is a common incense burning utensil used by the Chinese people during the Han and Jin Dynasties. The most common ones are bronze and ceramic. The name of Boshan furnace comes from its appearance. The furnace body is bean-shaped, resembling bronze ware, with a high and pointed cover, hollow, and shaped like overlapping mountains, with cloud patterns, figures, birds and beasts carved in between. When burning incense in the furnace, light smoke floats out and lingers around the furnace body, naturally forming a hazy effect of mountains and rivers floating beasts, just like the legendary sea fairy mountain "Boshan".
The original was unearthed in the Han Tomb (Liu Sheng Tomb) in Mancheng, Hebei in 1968. This furnace integrates multiple elements such as fairy mountains, oceans, dragons, and strange beasts. It not only reflects the Han people's belief system of pursuing immortality and longevity, but also reflects the Han Dynasty's "all-encompassing and commanding the four seas" mind and demeanor. The exquisite casting skills fully interpret the high wisdom and extraordinary creativity of the Han Dynasty craftsmen in its heyday.
The structure of Boshan furnace mainly consists of furnace body and base. There is a mountain-shaped cover on the furnace body. The cover is generally carved with figures, dragons and tigers, birds and beasts, etc., and there are hollow holes to allow the incense to penetrate, forming an effect of clouds and mist surrounding the mountain. It is generally believed that the mountain-shaped cover symbolizes the overseas fairy mountain "Boshan", which is in line with the cultural atmosphere of the prevalence of immortals in the Han and Wei dynasties. Some scholars also believe that its prototype is Huashan, Taishan, Penglai Mountain, Xumi Mountain, Kunlun Mountain, etc., and it may also contain the meaning of Fengshan. Its true meaning is not yet completely clear.
The base is disc-shaped, and figures, dragons and tigers, birds and beasts are generally carved in the middle. There are also those without a tray. A gilded silver Boshan furnace with a long handle was unearthed in Maoling. The material is mainly copper, but there are also ceramics and jade. The copper Boshan furnace in the Han Dynasty is often gilded, silver or inlaid with gems. Later, Buddhism also used this kind of incense burner during the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the decorations often used lotus, flames, auspicious clouds, etc. This type of incense burner has also spread to the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Japan has a white porcelain Boshan incense burner from the Sui and Tang dynasties, with a lotus-shaped cover, which is deeply influenced by Buddhism.
